Research indicates that cellphones cause distraction leading to stress and frustration as students loose valuable time. Humans tend to calculate or observe small shifts as manageable. Something that can be controlled or rectified when ever we want to. It is when a dramatic, unannounced (really?) gigantic shift occurs and kicks us in the stomach that we realize how easily 15 minutes became 150. Unfortunately, one thing that we cannot recycle is time.
Children struggle to manage their digital dependency. Most students when asked, unabashedly accept that phone, internet and all things digital, are one of their main attention-grabbers and time wasters.
Acceptance is responsibility. When children realize and accept a situation, they need to be complimented and supported. Adults must support with strategies, plans, positive feedback and gentle reminders.
Model behavior. Children are quick to observe and learn.
